Beyond “Popular” | Nada Surf

Later this month, New York’s Nada Surf will release The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy, their seventh studio album.

You can download the new single, “When I Was Young” for free at

Many associate the band with the mid-90s single “Popular” (which MTV played ad naseum).  The lyrics to “Popular”, sarcastically stated by lead singer Matthew Caws, are excerpts from a 1960s teen advice book.

These connotations are unfortunate because Nada Surf has released a lot of good music since then, mainly 2002’s Let Go and 2005’s The Weight is A Gift.

If you can let your mind get beyond the irritating “Popular”, either of these albums, though softer, more sing-along, and generally more accessible than my normal fare, are certainly worth a listen.
